Bring on the controversy. Ron Marz, a writer who was mercilessly destroyed by fans of former GL Hal Jordan has returned for the final 6 issue arc of the current Green Lantern series starring Kyle Rayner as GL. We already know that after this series ends, there will be a Green Lantern: Rebirth mini-series followed by a new Green Lantern series starring Hal Jordan. Marz wasnt only destroyed for the way he wrote Hal out of the book, but for Kyle's first story also, where Major Force cut up Kyle's then girlfriend and stuffed her in the fridge for Kyle to find. "Sickening" some fans said, or "Misogyny" said others. Much like the current Identity Crisis series, some people obviously can't tell the difference between the villian of the book and the writer's own mindset. So with the return of Marz, Kyle returns to Earth from a way-too-long journey into outer space. Gets dumped by his gf, feels replaced by the Justice League, and has Fatality and Major Force once again gunning for him. So he goes home to his mom to talk about how much his life sucks, which of course means her days are numbered too. He leaves to visit the graves of his dead-gf Alex, and his other dead-ex-gf Donna Troy (aka Troia aka Wonder Girl 1) and gives a great line to Donna's tombstone. "We ended so suddenly, it almost seemed like we were forced apart" This is a direct slap in the face to John Byrne who forced editorial to give him control of Donna when he was writing Wonder Woman and just stole her out of Ron's GL run, barely giving them time to explain it. Way to go Ron! Kyle returns home to find his mom's glasses crushed and something sticking out of the fridge. He immediately assumes the worst and has a look of absolute horror on his face. He opens the door and finds...food. Whew. Major Force wanders in and says he's disappointed Kyle thinks that Force would repeat himself. And If the fridge upset him, he better not look in the stove... Major Force chopped up Kyle's mom and put her in the stove. Beautiful. I applaud Marz for not backing down from his critics and having the courage to do this AGAIN. Kyle is crazy with rage, takes it to Major Force hard and on the last page is telling Force to stand up or die on his knees. I HOPE Kyle kills him and doesn't become an accessory to more future deaths like Batman and Superman. It will also open many more future storylines between Kyle and the league, Kyle and Hal, and Kyle and whatever comes out of Identity Crisis. Kudos to Mr. Marz for a job well done so far.
