Hmmm, pretty caustic, but not far off from many people's views of other people's favourite genres. Personally, I dislike most science fiction books for the simple reason that they often focus so much on IDEAS and so little on plot that I get bored reading them (Vernon Vinge falls into this category for me). But that is a very, very personal take and I would never expect everyone to agree with me. For my own tastes, however, there has, indeed, been very little good sci fi or fantasy over the years. This is to be expected. There is very little good in any category, whether that category be music, food, books, movies or whathaveyou. Equally people will find specifics they like in each of these fields. Just because you like the Honor Harrington books, for example, does not indicate you will necessarily like David Brin, despite the fact that both of them fall under the terribly broad rubric of "science fiction"; the same could be said in fantasy for those who like R.A. Salvatore and Guy Gavriel Kay -- liking one neither forces you to like the other nor prevents you from it. Sounds like Greg has pretty firm tastes. That's fine. The problem is venting so publicly and so damingly on types of books that others like. His opinions, fine, but to state his opinions as The Truth is counterproductive, to say the least.
