Greyhawk help....

JamesL85

First Post
I'm trying to help one of the other DM's in my group find information on the City of Greyhawk (or Orme, as it's called in his campaign).

I've already bought him "Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins," "WG7 - Castle Greyhawk," and "World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting" from RPGNow, but I'm curious if any of you OD&D players know of any more sources. I think I've just about exhausted the published stuff (at least, all that I could find), but maybe some of you know of some fansites, or something that might detail some (or hopefully a LOT) of the city, and can point me in the right direction.....

Edition doesn't matter, but we will be playing a 3.5 game....

Thanks

Gary Gygax's original Greyhawk City was never published, but his novels, especially Saga of Old City and City of Hawks, have much information on it. The forthcoming Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh will not detail the city itself but will have a town of similar feel and some shared places.

The official TSR version of the City was first published in the Sargent/Rose/Niles City of Greyhawk boxed set, which The Adventure Begins draws on heavily. More recently it's been remapped, and started to be detailed piecemeal, in Living Greyhawk Journal...

You won't find WG7 doing you much good: it's a satirical module lambasting Gary's Castle Greyhawk dungeons.

Hi James---

You should ditch Castle Greyhawk and find the Greyhawk Ruins module instead: Castle Greyhawk is a joke module, not for serious dungeon delvers.

You'll also want to check into the City of Greyhawk boxed set, especially, as well as the following other GH sources, quoted from Jason Zavoda's fabulous Greyhawk index:

I'm trying to help one of the other DM's in my group find information on the City of Greyhawk (or Orme, as it's called in his campaign).

I've already bought him "Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins," "WG7 - Castle Greyhawk," and "World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting" from RPGNow, but I'm curious if any of you OD&D players know of any more sources.

There are actually several versions of the setting, so it depends somewhat on what version of Greyhawk's history you're using. I see there as being about three major versions:

Original version - from the folio, and later boxed set, published in the 1st edition days. While there's a considerable amount of history associated with the setting, it's mostly covered in old out-of-print adventures and articles in the first 60 or so issues of Dragon; most often this set is a starting point for however a particular DM wanted to flesh things out.

Greyhawk Wars/From the Ashes - basically the second edition version, this was an attempt to basically redraw the Greyhawk political map (as a result of a series of wars) and give it a different tone, since the Forgotten Realms had basically taken over as the default setting. A lot of Greyhawk's audience were (and are) split over whether this was a good thing. IMHO, the quality of the various supplements was much higher than average, so even though I didn't like the metaplot I still used a decent amount of this when I played Greyhawk.

Living Greyhawk - in third edition, Greyhawk became the default setting for D&D, but WOTC didn't want to run a metaplot. So they only published a couple of supplements, set some years after the "From the Ashes" setting with a few of the major conflicts dialed back to "simmer". Then they basically gave the setting to the RPGA, who publish adventures and run events for their members.

EBay is your friend for any older stuff you might want, but for currently published material Living Greyhawk is probably the way to go:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/welcome

Many of the folks involved in LG are long-time Greyhawk fans, so surfing some of their websites will probably expose you to a lot of older material.

I would say that The City of Greyhawk Boxed Set, for second edition AD&D is the best source about the City of Greyhawk. However, as you already have The Adventure Begins, I'm not sure how much it will add to your game, perhaps better graphics (in colour), and the great mini-adventures.

As posted before, some of the City of Greyhawk's districts were updated to third edition in early issues of the Living Greyhawk Journa, however, I wouldn't mind much about differences between editions as most of the previously cited material is nearly free of rules.

How timely! I too am starting a new greyhawk campaign after the first of the year. Thanks for this great listing, Grodog!

WOW!!!!

I hope my MailWasher doesn't have EnWorlds reminders blocked (anyone know what server the mail comes from when you subscribe to a thread???). I was wondering if no one on these boards ever HEARD of Greyhawk there for a while.... :p

Boy was I WRONG!!!!

Grodog.....Thanks a TON!!! I do have the Dragon Annual (or whatever the CD's with the first 250 issues of Dragon) and I have a friend that has all the issues from there on. Thanks a bunch.

Also, thanks to everyone else who chimed in. I spent most of the afternoon looking for the City of Greyhawk in pdf form. The closest thing I found was that Bastion Press had it on it's schedule to be done when Wizards told them to stop (that one had to have been a HUGE brain fart on someone's part). I tried to find the boxed set on ebay, but no luck. Found 9 copies on Amazon, ranging from $30 to $85+. I was kind of hoping for a $5 or $10 download....LOL

Again, thanks to everyone for helping me (and my friend) out....

There are a fair number of GH fans on ENWorld, as well as in various GH-specific forums and sites. I have a list of GH forums/sites on my web page that I recommend if you're looking to hook up with some GH fans: http://www.greyhawkonline.com/grodog/gh_links.html

Of the sites I list there, the WotC GH forum, Canonfire's forums/the Greytalk list, and the GH forums on Pied Piper and Dragonsfoot are probably the most productive and generally useful ones out there. There are also a fair number of GH folks on ENWorld and at the Necromancer Games forums, too.

Grodog.....Thanks a TON!!! I do have the Dragon Annual (or whatever the CD's with the first 250 issues of Dragon) and I have a friend that has all the issues from there on. Thanks a bunch.

You're welcome, though the list is the work of long-time Greytalk member Jason Zavoda---I'm merely a frequest user of his work :D You'll also want to try to pick up the first five issues of the Living Greyhawk Journal, which were published separately from Dragon, Dungeon, and Polyhedron for a little while. As Ron mentioned, there are two or three articles about the City of Greyhawk in those early issues, and IIRC Paizo recently put them up for sale on their web site, too (though I think they're a bit pricey).

I hadn't realized that CoG hadn't ever been .pdf'd in the ESD project. If you have The Adventure Begins, you'll have a pretty good basis for the city. You should also check out some of the Gygax "Gord" novels, which have a lot of action in the city, as well as the upcoming Castle Zagyg project he and Rob Kuntz are publishing via Troll Lord Games, which will be of use, I'm sure.

I tried to find the boxed set on ebay, but no luck. Found 9 copies on Amazon, ranging from $30 to $85+. I was kind of hoping for a $5 or $10 download....LOL

If you look for it on eBay, NobleKnight.com, or one of the other OOP dealers, you should be able to find a copy for $25-40, if you're willing to be patient.
