That was more "AD&D crashing" than it was Vpire being mainstream.

Well, they DID attempt a VtM series on Fox, when Fox was still a young channel. However, they also managed to mangled the vampire clans. For a long while, that was as attempted-mainstream as you could get - Vampire 90210

I also think a lot of people use published settings like I do, I will use the maps, the locations, npc'd, and lore when I remember them but will change and ignore stuff and import locations and stuff from other setting as I feel the need. Official lore and contunity means nothing. It is a starting point for me and I only remember half of it at any time anyway.
it is effectively a derived homebrew.

That’s certainly how I run my Greyhawk campaigns. Since Greyhawk is out of print, there’s no universally agree canon. But perhaps Forgotten Realms games that keep to canon exist?
