Grim Tales: Creature Creation Rocks

OK, I'll come clean. The first few times through, I really gave short shrift to the Creature Creation chapter of Grim Tales. Hey, I already have that Dragon magazine monster-builder article, and besides, I've made a bunch of my own monsters already.

But one of the EnWorld reviews prompted me take a second look. And that chapter /is/ really pretty nifty. It makes monster creation much, much faster by laying out all the basic design parameters, and then offering a nice catalog of special abilitites -- along with some sense of their respective CR impact. It's much more useful than that Monster Builder piece.

Using Grim Tales, I banged out a unique dragon for my campaign in about half the time it would have normally taken me. Here it is, over in my Rogues Gallery thread:

Hraust, Dragon of the Sheldings.

I'm still not 100% sure about Upper_Krust's challenge rating system, but then again I'm not sure about any CR over 20 anyway.

Hmm... Imagine how easy it will be when I get around to releasing the Excel sheet for the entirety of Chapter 13... ;)

I agree,

This system combined with the Magic Chapter and Experience Generation are my top 3 favorite parts of the book.

I have pretty much decided to chuck many of my other books as this is THE text for running a great game in my opinion.
