Legend
Hi all,
We recently finished a D&D campaign, and the DM is going to run a modified version of Descent into Avernus. We're starting at level 3. I've decided to make a character inspired by Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.
Here's what I've come up with:
CHULT
'warforged'
STR 16 DEX 10 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 15 CHA 8
Skills: Animal Handling, Athletics, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Stealth, Survival
Tools: alchemist's supplies, playing cards, vehicles (land)
Background: Custom (All Eyes on You feature)
Fighter 1
Ranger 3: Primeval Guardian (UA) subclass + Primal Awareness* variant class feature
Ranger 4: Strength +2 or Resilient (Wisdom)
Ranger 5: Extra Attack
Ranger 6: Deft Explorer (Tireless)
I'll take at least 7 levels of ranger, but I'm also going to take more fighter levels. Will probably go Champion for subclass. The campaign's only going to go up to the levels 12-15 range.
Backstory: Chult was created by a Lantanese artificer and a Chultan druid. They perished during the Spellplague and he spent many years afterwards dormant, until a Flaming Fists patrol found him and brought him back to Fort Beluarian. He has learned a lot from the Fists, and has come to view Liara Portyr as something of a mother figure. He has accompanied her to Luskan (the DM has moved the starting point of Descent from Baldur's Gate to Luskan, where a "Frosted Fists" offshoot established themselves as authority figures in the previous campaign.)
Roleplaying: Although I'd love to be able to say "I am Groot" at the gaming table, I thought that might be a bit too cheesy, so I changed his name. I also like the idea that maybe he really is Chult. Like maybe he's an embodiment of the jungle itself or something. I will have him be able to say more than just his name, but he won't be very talkative.
I'm not going to have him use weapons, instead focusing on two-handed unarmed fighting (for the d8 dmg die) and grappling. I might eventually take the Grappler feat.
I intend to describe the goodberries as growing on his body. He then plucks them off and gives them to people. Thorn whip will be his fingers shooting out vines like Groot does in the movies. Druidcraft can be used to produce things like Groot's light-emitting spores perhaps.
Any armor upgrades I get I'm going to describe as being made of special timber rather than metal.
Am thinking of swapping out either Animal Handling or Medicine for Intimidation if the DM is OK with letting me us STR with it instead of CHA, as I see Groot as being more one of those physically intimidating types.
I'm hoping to describe the alchemist's supplies as being something integrated in his body that he can use to "grow" stuff. I've decided that the Fists taught him how to play cards and drive carts.
Personal Characteristics: I tend to fuss over these for most of my characters. I've settled on my two personality traits, but am still trying to figure out my ideal, bond, and flaw.
Traits: "I face problems head-on. A simple, direct solution is the best path to success. Also, I am naively unfamiliar with social norms and expectations."
Ideal: ??
Bond: ??
Flaw: ??
Since Groot is loyal to his friends in the movie, even making the ultimate sacrifice for them, I want to include that in my PC's traits, but can't decide if it should be the ideal or bond, though.
I also had "Violence is my answer to almost any challenge" as his flaw, but I'm not sure if I want that after all.
Anyone got any suggestions?
