Grr: Something Frustrating

The way every idea I have is already being done. I just saw the article linked on the front page about the King Arthur movie being done, sans magic elements. I always thought that would be something cool, a movie along the lines of Cornwell's books. But that brings this up: so many ideas I've had in my head that would be cool, someone's already doing. Examples:

I once remarked to a friend, "It would be really cool if someone did a Beast of Le Gevaudan movie". A week later, Brotherhood of the Wolf comes out.

Along the same lines, I wrote an article proposing a theory on the Beast's identity. A week or two after it saw print, I heard that some French scientist said he found the taxidermed carcass and identified it.

Today, I get the Freedom City book. Several things I'd been mulling over translating into MnM terms - serpent men, Prof. Challenger's Lost World, kaiju, and making Freedom City co-exist with Freeport - were done in there.

Can't I keep my own ideas? ;)

Lost World!? Does that mean there are dinosaur stats?

No, you can't. The Idea-Thieves have to make a living selling stolen a-ha! moments to interested buyers.

Say! Idea-Thieves. Hmm.... :)

No. Especially not the idea involving Milla Jovovich and 23 liters of tapioca pudding.

But seriously....

I've often chalked it up to similar media influences. I mean, we've all seen the classic Kathy Ireland movie
Alien from LA, so naturally of us gamers start designing underground cities where everyone's from Austrailia. It's only natural! We see the same stuff, read the same stuff, and then its only natural that we get the same bursts of creativity independly from each other.

....

... what do you mean I'm the only one who's seen that movie?

Oh, no, you aren't the only one, my brother.

So this is what it sounds like- when doves cry!

A few, not a great number (AFAIK, only the more commonly seen-in-comics types like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops). Truth be told, I'm not 100% certain it's Challenger's Lost World, but it's *A* Lost World. I think there's also stats for some generic kaiju, as well, could be wrong.

Guess I should have thought of these when answering your thread about MnM bestiaries...

I believe it was C.S. Lewis who quipped that no one who tries to be original ever is.

Speaking of Idea-Thieves, one thing I notice the more I study the M&M core book is how much of the material is derived from other sources. For example, the use of Hero Points and Villain Points very nicely parallels the 3rd edition of DC Heroes.

Note: This isn't met as a criticism or slam against the system. It is one of the strengths of M&M that it takes what is best and fashions those best bits into a new whole.

Lol... yeah, I know what you mean.

I don't even put my ideas on the internet anymore as I'm afraid it will show up elsewhere.

Heck, maybe there aren't any more original ideas anymore? Maybe they've all been used at some point or another? I've heard that theory before.

Except it seems like people keep coming up with new stuff. :)
