Guardian Feature on Live Action Roleplaying

A feature on live action roleplaying in the guardian (and one of their picks of the day, for Saturday 13th). Someone linked to an article with a similar bent from the Times a while ago.

I think it is odd that LARP - a really obscure, and slightly weird minority passtime - is getting such coverage. I share the observation that LARPing just isn't right. I was once invited to an event which was, unbeknownst to me beforehand, a Vampire LARP and I can honestly say that it was the most terrifying experience of my entire life.

I was once invited to a Vampire LARP- it was quite possibly one of the lamest, most boring experiences of my life.

There's only one thing that would make me go to a LARP again- cute goth chicks. :)

Ah. So, would you paint all Tabletop RPGs with the same brush after playing only one game? If not, don't go making generalizations about LARP based upon one experience.

I Larped. I'll probably Larp again. I have friends who Larp monthy.

Larping and table top gaming are the same. They have some people that get carried away and make the game weird, but usually the people are there to just have fun.

Hey nHammer, where do you go for that? I always wanted to check one out. Since you live fairly close to me, I figured you would know of a good one.

I started and ran a LARP (Vampire, of course) for a while, before the needs of work required me to turn it over to new management. It was an enjoyable experience, and I'd probably do it again if given the chance. Of course, it was back when Vampire was first out - so the "goth" crowd hadn't really caught on here yet. It was nearly all people who participated in PnP games in the area, and some from another LARP (which was fantasy in nature - think SCA with foam swords.)

I ran the game in a local hotel - a really large hotel - with a conservatory nearly the size of a mall, and huge indoor replication of a New Orleans street complete with rivers, waterfalls, numerous buildings... Man it was awesome! Check it out here: http://www.gaylordhotels.com/gaylordopryland/tour/tour_delta.cfm

Anyway, I'd love to do something like this again. But it would require more time than I currently have. One day, perhaps...
