Gun Fu --- the new EN Minigame

Y'know, this is a genre that hadn't really been covered for d20, as far as I know.

Anyone read this yet and care to comment?

Well, um, I wrote it. So yeah, I've read it.

:D

This one just sort of "slipped out" on me. I meant to be a little more proactive here.

But yeah, Gun-Fu: Balletic Ballistics is available now on RPGNow! Don't miss out! Blazing action and over-the-top coolness on every page! Bang bang bang!

Whee!

Welcoming comments from readers or questions from contemplators, right here.

Then I have spared you the indignity of starting a thread about your own product. Excellent.

Soooo...this uses the "Mutants and Masterminds" damage save, right? I don't believe anyone has ever used that with the d20 Modern rules.

Yep, damage saves from M&M were employed. A little tweaked here and there, but overall it was a pretty easy retrofit. It was really important to me take hit points out of the equation. Gun-Fu sort of puts the determination of a character's fate fully in the hands of the players -- it's not really easy to die in this game, though it's easy to suffer ghastly wounds that render you nearly helpless -- until that fateful moment when your best friend goes down and you roar to your feet, shrieking in mad fury as you unload a couple of sub-machine guns on the suddenly-not-smiling-anymore bad guys.

An effort that costs you your life, of course, but wasn't it cool?

Heh.

JJ: ;) There's a couple of interior thumbnails on the RPGNow page, so folks can get a look at a sample. Pretty sweet stuff, says me.

One critisim of M&M's Damage System is that firearms generally break down to something like four damage levels (like +3 to +7), making guns too similar and kinda boring. Do you follow this methodology or did you do something different? Disclaimer: not saying you did something boring, just how close to this mechanic did you follow.

By the by, the thumbnails look good!

One of the conscious decisions I made with this product was to make guns VERY similar to one another. There are no descriptions of individual models of guns, just categories like "light pistol" or "assault rifle" or whatever.

In the movies that this game is based on, it NEVER matters what sort of gun somebody is using. All guns are pretty much the same. How much damage a gun deals seems to have more to do with how angry the person pulling the trigger is than the calibre or muzzle velocity.

My hope is that it's not boring for the same reason the movies themselves aren't boring -- because the stories are so much fun and the characters are so cool.

Gun-Fu is not by ANY stretch of the imagination any sort of reality-based model. It's meant to model the dynamics and typical situations of John Woo shoot-em-ups, NOT to present accurate portrayals of what happens when something gets hit by a round from a Colt 1911.

I hope people will find that a useful thing for a game to model, and that they're able to play fun, action-filled games with it.

In terms of portability, it occurs to me that this sort of system would be great for Hong Kong cinema's other major export --- the kung fu movie, in which the hero can take all manner of abuse, just so long as he keeps doing cool stuff.

Heck, rub "Gun Fu" and "Blood and Fists" together, and I bet it damn near writes itself.

LMAO, that is soooooo true. (And on a side note, it really doesn't matter what kind of gun you get shot by, it makes much more difference on where you got shot...)

It doesn't quite PUBLISH itself, but yeah, if everybody else has as much fun with this system as I do, expect to see some genre-pushing.

It's amazing what happens to d20 with just a couple of rules changes. Take away hit points, take away class abilities and it's a whole different game.
