Hackmaster won during a period when the OAs were pretty screwed up. They handed out an award to one of those d20 books with the traced porn covers (forget which; even GAMA doesn't care enough to put it somewhere you can easily Google it) and were part of a general power struggle over GAMA. Incidentally, the ENnies rise owes quite a bit to the OAs stumbling, especially since it was seen as a way to create a marketable sales award. The ENnies rose in favour because they would avoid behind the scenes personality clashes, but could be manipulated through brute force voting campaigns.</blockquote>
