The only place I know of wing span being mentioned is under Wings of Flying:

Wings of Flying
When the wearer speaks the command word, this cloak turns into a pair of gigantic wings (bat or bird, 20-foot span) and empower the wearer to fly as with a fly spell anywhere wide enough to accommodate the wingspan.
Caster Level: 5th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, fly; Market Price: 22,000 gp; Weight: 2 lb.

I'd use the 20' wing span in my game for a medium creature; for a small one, I'd use a 10' wing span, probably.

Well, scientifically speaking, there's no way someone of human build and musculature could fly, so don't expect a scientific answer.

Assuming that your character is 6 feet tall and has standard "angel wings", I'm going to assume that in a folded position they stretch from about a foot above his head to nearly the ground.

Figuring that that part of the wing is about half the actual wing, that would mean that you've got a wingspan of almost thirty feet - which seems reasonable to me.

If memory serves, and please forgive if it's rusty here - but wasn't average wingspan 2.5 - 3 times the height of the body?

So 6' tall human = 15' - 18' wingspan average

There is no game mechanic limiting your ability to fly in confined spaces. You do not change sizes when you expand your wings so you take up a 5'x5'(x5') square(or cube if you wish). Any other rules are house rules and not core rules. If you want a good guide for such a rule the Avariael in Races of Faerun has such a limitation thier wing span is 12ft. There maybe a rule change in 3.5 on the space needed to fly but as far as I know there is no such general rule now.

I hope we will see some sort of comprehensive rule in 3.5 reguarding wing span for creatures with non-magical flight, maybe just some default values for normal creatures of various sizes as a rule variant.

I would agree with Sejs....!!!

Hello Anditch,

I would agree with the poster Sejs...as he states from memory that the wing span is "generally" 2.5-3 times the height of the being tring to fly, and if you get your Budgy and stretch him out you will see that is roughly correct...hahahaha !! Seriously though it sort of makes sence if you think about it, your wing span for a 6ft human would be in the region of 18-20 ft which is in fact 2.5 times his height. Remember the Movie "Michael" with John "Chiney Chin Chin" Travolta, where he plays the Arch Angel Michael...well if you did see the movie you will see the size of his wings were quite large although he did manage to conceal them under a Rain Coat when he was traveling incognito. But never the less the wings were certainly at least double his height if not more. I think you could even see them on the Video Cover. Hope this helps. What size did you think your wing span was ? Hope you weren't trying to Blag iddy biddy wings ?? hehehe. see ya soon dude !!! ;)

Hi Anditch

There are two ways of looking at this.

The first says that your flight is non magical, therefore the laws of physics come into play. Now assuming this we have to look at birds, they have hollow bones so they are lighter than normal for a creature of their size, even so their wingspan is approx 2.5 times their height. Now assuming your characters bones arn't hollow, which would surely have some impact on stats somewhere, your wingspan must be at least 2.5 times your height and probably even 3 or 4 times your height otherwise flying isn't possible. Now we could assume a greater wing strength than birds have to bring them back down to 2.5 times your height. Whatever you cannot fly unless you have the space to spread your wings and probably need a considerable amount more space to do anything other than short hops.

The second says that your flight is magical. The wings can therefore be any size we decide. This has certain disadvantages however, no flight in anti-magic or magic dead zones, your flying could be dispelled! You get the idea.

I prefer that a celestial fly's by non-magical means and in dungeon corridors the space limitations are such that getting airborne isn't possible that much.
