Half Dragons

Is there another book besides Monster Manual that has half-dragon template? I don't see it in savage species and was just wondering.

If i'm adding the template to a character I lose HD right? I mean like a 3rd level elf who's level 1 rogue with the half-dragon taking the other 2 levels only gets hps for being 1st level? He doesn't gain any dragon tempalte HD or anything right? he'd only have 1d8(size larger than 1d6) hps?

For skills does he still get 2 levels worth of skills at the 6 ?

You'd never think to look there, but in the back of City of the Spider Queen, in the monsters section, they have the templates for Half-Faerun Dragons (Brown, Deep, Fang, Shadow, & Song). Don't ask me why they decided to put them in there, but they did.

Silly WOTC.

Oops. Move this please to the player forum. Man I am a ditz today. Not only did I put this in the wrong forum without realizing, I also forgot I had already started a thread on half-dragons. I apologize greatly.

Hey Ao, why do you think they did that?!;)

yep!

(ok now I'll actually contribute something)

I don't have it yet so I don't know if there are any HalfDragons actually In the adveture (CotSQ) (you don't have to say if there are or not to avoid potential spoilers)
Maybe they put them in there so that if/when the Players got tired of the likely TPKs they could make up a group of all HalfDragons and have a go at it?!

A new player in my undersea game is considering a half-dragon turtle PC. I may have to modify the half-dragon template just a bit, for that one. :D

[Spoil] There's a half-dragons from Faerûnian dragon types in the module, so they put the template extension there [/Spoil]

You could say that you "lose" some HD, but it's more accurate if you say you "don't get" some HD, but increase in effective character level (ECL) nonetheless.

A half-dragon elf rogue 1 has an ECL of 3.

He'll get starting equipment like a 3rd-level character, and needs the same amount of XP for level-up like a 3rd-level character. These things depend on ECL

He gets HD, skills feats and ability increases (and class features) like a 1st level character. So he gets his second feat at ECL 5, his first ability score increase at ECL 6, and so on. He has (8+Int) * 4 at ECL 3, while a normal elf rogue3 has (8+Int) * 6. These things depend on class levels, your level adjustment won't help you.

Also not that AFAIK your rogue still gets a d6 as HD, since the dragon HD increase is only for racial HD (at least, that's what they did in CotSQ. A half-drago elf rogue 6 has 6d6. A Half-dragon Locathah rogue 6 would have 2d10 + 6d6 (Locathah hare humanoids with 2 racial had, which are d8. As a half-dragon, they become d10.)

Sorry, but this is wrong. The ECL is 4 (Half Dragon +3, Rogue +1)

Since when is it +3? Says +2 and gives an example that adds +2?
In Savage Species, they list just taking Half Dragon as a +2, the go on to say its an extra +1 for each of the subtypes listed (presumably, choosing Shadow Dragon as your lineage may get you an extra +2 instead of +1, since their breath weapon is negative energy levels, which is also their immunity).

So KaeYoss is correct that a 1st level Half-Dragon is an ECL 4.
