Half-fiend template question

Ok, I'm new at this. If you start off as a half-fiend, is that considered your 'race', or are you considered to be half-fiend, half some other race? Meaning, if you were half-fiend/human, would you get the human racial bonuses as well as the half-fiend bonuses? And this half-fiend/human would be ECL +3? Thanks.

Yeah you got it right. If you started a 1st level character off with the half-fiend template he would have an ECL of 4 (lvl 1 +3) and would have all the benefits of being human and half-fiendish.
