I like to build characters that will be strong and have a unique playstyle. There's a number of different paths for this. My first concept might be something like Single Classed Fighter, focused on being the best 1v1 swordsman. As such I'd take Dual Wielder, Defensive Duelist and Skulker. I'd theme the guy as thief via his background. My 2nd might be similar but instead of best 1v1 swordsman i'm focused on defending my allies. For this one I'm going level 5 Fighter Level 4 Rogue ASAP. I'm taking Sentinel and Defensive Duelist ASAP. The basic concept is to use cunning action to position myself near an enemy, the threat of sentinel keeps them focused on me and defensive duelist keeps me alive. The high mobility from cunning action keeps me in range of all my allies, so I can fall back to protect them at anytime. I'd probably go more rogue heavy for this character as the combination of sneak attack + sentinel with vex should be highly effective, even if mostly as a deterrent from hitting allies. The option to poison on cunning strike is also pretty sweet. Since I'd focus on rogue here then i'd also take mage slayer to help with my saves. The third is the concept of a character that cunningly maneuvers to strike down priority targets. I'm going Dual Wielder, Defensive Duelist and Mage Slayer for this one. I'm ensuring I take 2 levels of rogue by early tier 2 for cunning action. I'd probably go for fighter 11 next. Before talking high level maybe think some on what path your leaning toward with the lower level character.
