Balflings?* :D
* No, not Gelflings. ;)

OO! How about BAMFlings?!

Three foot tall blue furry guys with prehensile pointy tails, two fingered hands/feet and teleporting powers. :D

PS: Wish I could XP you again for bringing up Gelflings. Haven't thought of them in years. Alas, must spread some around....againnnnn.

Yep, they are - minor nature spirits that took mortal form to enjoy the tangible plaesures of the world. In a way, they were incorporeal fey creatures that saw the fun elves were having and decide to try it out for themselves. Some say the elves had a jest at the hillenfaey's expense, whilst the 6-meals a day hillenfaey content they are quite happy with the choice, thank-you-very-much.

I believe I'll yoink that reasoning, minus the incorporeal part. I picture the halflings' pure-fey ancestors as the minute trickster elves of classic fairy tales (picture, for instance, Puck from Midsummer Night's Dream). As they grew accustomed to the mortal world they evolved into content, if gluttonous, countryfolk, but their ancestors' curiosity, thirst for adventure and mischievous nature is still firmly in their DNA, even if it's dormant in most.
