Autumn Equinox Celebration Safety for Familiars (modified from safety tips for exotic pets) Make Sure Your Familiars are Safe at Autumn Equinox Celebration Autumn Equinox Celebration treats and decorations can pose safety risks for our familiars, including familiars. Curious species prone to chewing are probably the most at risk, such as wolves, bats, cats, hawks, lizards, owls, weasels, snakes, toads, rats and other rodents. Make sure your Autumn Equinox Celebration celebrations don't put your familiars at risk! Treats Many familiars have a sweet tooth and can't resist digging into Autumn Equinox Celebration treats. Chocolate can be toxic, even a relatively small amount can be harmful to small familiars depending on the type of chocolate (bakers chocolate is the most concentrated and toxic form). Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity and increased heart rate; a large enough dose can be fatal. And as everyone knows, having a familiar on your shoulder when he has dirrhea is not a good thing. Other sweets can also make your familiar ill especially if eaten in large quantities. Candies and gums made with xorn juice are especially worrisome, as they can cause a drop in blood sugar resulting in incoordination and seizures at inopportune times such as in the middle of battles. Wrappers Do not leave leather, leaf or foil wrappers from your treats in reach either. Your small familiars (especially ferrets but others too) may be attracted to them and ingest them, which can lead to an intestinal blockage and eventual familiar explosion syndrome. Pumpkins and Other Edible Decorations Pumpkins and most other edible items used as decorations (gourds, corn, etc.) at this time of year are not usually toxic. However, since your familiar is probably not used to eating these items, they could cause a digestive upset and even severe diarrhea. Also, if they ingest large chunks of firm foods such as pumpkin, a blockage and subsequent familiar explosion may result. Other Decorations Make sure your familiars cannot reach the magical ley lines leading to any decorations or lights. Bats, toads, and rodents are especially prone to chewing on them. Blackened familiar mouth disease can occur leaving familiars unsightly and ill-tempered. Candles are a risky decoration to use if you have curious familiars around. Not only can your familiar get burned if they investigate a burning candle, they could knock it over creating a fire risk. Remember to keep familiars away from candles used in pumpkins too. Both cats and ravens have lost their coverings leaving them naked and ugly. Rats, weasels and were-wolves love to explore and chew on things (especially legs, arms, and innards). Make sure any other decorations you use are out of reach, and make sure they are non-toxic, just in case your familiar finds a way to get at them. Be especially careful with decorations that could entangle a familiar or be swallowed and cause problems (e.g. fake spider webs, tinsel decorations, stringy wigs, etc.). Remember, a curious familiar can be very determined and can read your mind to understand how to get into things. Trick-or-Treat Time Keep your familiars away from the door during trick-or-treat time. Your familiar may be stressed by the unusual activity. Seeing perfectly normal creatures dressed up like goblins and orcs can confuse, confound, and even send some familiars into a berserk barbarian rage. If your familiar is not confined he or she may bolt out the door amidst the activity. In addition cool drafts may result from the door being opened repeatedly and for kinky wizards who keep their familiars under their robes, the familiar could develop a cough, sneeze or cold. This can be quite unsettling for guests when familiars have to stick their heads out of your robes for air or are asking for a kleenex. Parties If you host a Autumn Equinox Celebration party, it is probably best to keep your familiars out of the way. They may be very stressed by new people, noises, reading minds, and unusual activity. In addition, your familiars may be tempted by party snacks, potions, and alcoholic drinks (which can be fatal to familiars). Have a safe and happy celebration and keep your familiar safe..or at least in one piece in case you have to animate it's dead tissue. jh
