D&D 3E/3.5 HALP! New to 4E, 3.5 makes me not understand :(

Huh. I stand corrected; my apologies to the original poster for spreading misinformation. Is the only purpose of having a key skill for no-check rituals that they determine the type of components you use for it, if your DM doesn't just let you burn GP directly (a very common houserule in my experience)?

Pretty much. It's really not in your interest to have them burn GP directly. Let them keep track of their components, it lets you keep a measure of control over what they can do. If Passwall is gonna be a problem in the next dungeon, for example, make it hard to buy the component for that skill. Not so hard they can't do it once or twice, but hard enough that they'll conserve it for when it's valuable (which can mean never using it at all).

Jump heights are expressed in feet not squares unlike jump distance, you are assuming the squares apply in the vertical. The big problem is what is some ones vertical space and do vertical squares exist (leaping over someone -what is their vertical reach wrt OAs for example). I think assuming that it works one way in 3E therefore must be the same in 4E is a risky proposition (assumption is the mother of all...;)), however no point arguing that further, especially if it works for you. I just have to figure a way for vertical space/reach/movement to work for me!

Well, the one-square-cubes approach doesn't contradict any rules, because there aren't any rules on this right now; it seems to me to be the simplest solution, but if you want to try and ad-hoc your own thing, go to town. There's no height data on monsters, though, so, uh... good luck with that, I guess.

Just to amplify/clarify on the rituals thing:
If you have a ritual scroll, you do NOT NEED the Ritual Caster feat. ANYONE can use a Ritual Scroll to perform ANY ritual, provided they pony up the component cost. If it's a no-fail ritual (like Raise Dead), it doesn't even matter if they have any skill training or even a decent innate bonus. Yes, given a scroll and the components, Grog the Int 4, Wis 4 Fighter can cast Raise Dead with no chance of failure. Just don't let him try to cast Cure Disease on you. :) (I personally find it amusing you're much more likely to kill someone with Cure Disease than with Raise Dead... well, I mean, they're already dead, but it seems to me the Raise Dead should require a pretty hard Religion check to do it JUST RIGHT, or you risk getting back something... wrong. Who KNOWS what's waiting at the edge of the Shadowfell, looking for an... invitation...)

Yeah, and that's why Raise Dead won't work per the book in my campaign. It's just a little too cheesy easy...

But i love that Pet Semetary idea you got going on there, that's a good way to do it. Sure, you're friend stands up, but he don't look right...

Hello guys, I recently started a 4E campaign with my old gaming group, and unfortunately, the 3.5 darkness clouds a lot of our assumed conceptions regarding play (main reason we switched to Alternity/CoC etc, we hated the monster 3.0/3.5 was)

You got a group playing Alternity and you suggested switching to another system??? :.-(
