Hand drawn art into pdfs

Hope this kind of technical query isn't off topic here...

We've got a couple of products under way for release as pdfs. Our arty chap has drawn some nice B&W maps that he wanted to scan into the PC and then fill parts in with a textured fill pattern. We've messed around with Photoshop, Illustrator and Streamline, changing image formats back and forth till the cows come home but what we're really after is something with the simplicity of the fill function on Paint (the one that comes with Windows) but with the ability to get some patterned fills rather than solid colour.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Create a texture fill pattern manually, with whatever patterns you want. Then jsut "Copy/Paste" and align them together. If you ahve small or curved areas, lasso first, then drag the lasso (move it) over to your pattern, then C&P it, then pasted version should then be the shape of the area you intially lassoed (if thats a word)
