Handling the Leadership Feat

dreaded_beast

First Post
Last session, my PCs acquired a rundown castle, a "fixer-upper". In preparations to take over the castle, one of the PCs picked up the Leadership feat to attract followers to take care of the castle and patrol the area. The castle is situated in the Stonelands of Cormyr, a wasteland of an area, littered with orcs, goblins, bandits, and all sorts of undesirable creatures.

Anyways, can anyone give any input on their experiences handling the Leadership feat, considerations, etc? I want the PC to feel his Leadership feat is useful and not feel that he has to leave his followers watching over the castle all the time.

A character who selects the Leadership feat gets a cohort and followers. Followers generally should stay behind while the cohort comes with the party. (That's the way I handle it for the bard in the group I DM for.) YMMV.

I always thought that the leadership feat was a rather lame feat. It seems to break a whole stack of rules about what a feat should be. Personally I think it should be something that is roleplayed all the way. Getting a home base should be a major adventure in itself. I don't consider it level based either, a sufficiently skilled player with enough social skills and/or enough funds should be able to put togther a home base.

I haven't had much experience with the leadership feat but how Laman deals with it is how I usually deal with it. Though if one of my players takes the feat they don't just wake up with a cohort and followers next to them one morning. I do make them roleplay through attracting the cohort and some of the followers.

That's why this feat is so great. You get followers that don't follow you, and cohorts that are made one one single person. :)

Thanks for the input.

Right now, I'm letting my player design the followers and cohort he wants, but I may tweak it a bit to fit the campaign.

Any other experiences or suggestions out there?
