His early Dirk Pitt books clocked in at roughly 300-400 pages, while his later books are roughly twice that. Unfortunately, those books aren't necessarily twice as good, they're just twice as long. Tom Clancy is another popular offender in this regard, and I find Anne Rice to be horrible in this aspect. I stopped reading her just because so much of her books read like filler instead of story. This is not to say that long novels can't be justified in their length, but it makes you wonder when every book seems to tack on an extra 50 to 100 (or more) pages to the last one. Sometimes I wonder if there is some sort of secret prize for the most unnecessarily long novel.</blockquote>
