I've been slowly and lazily working on some mechanics for a d20 game in the Potterverse. It seemed natural for me to start with magic, and then reverse engineer around that essential system. I think getting the magic system to feel right is essential. So to that end, here are one of the easiest and hardest spells to cast. You can infer what other systems would be like from the spell Lumos [Charm] Incantation: "Lumos" Spellcraft DC: 15 Range: Close (25ft + 5 ft./level) Duration: Permanent (D) Target: None Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No Effect: Creates a cone of light from the tip of the caster's wand, up to the range of the spell. The effect is dismissed by uttering the phrase "nox".

+5 -- The cone may become a sphere up to the limits of the range.
+10 -- The range increases to Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) for the cone shape only.
+15 -- The cone may become a sphere up to the limits of the range (up to Medium range).
Critical Success -- The light flashes brilliantly for a moment, dazing anyone in range of the effect if they fail a Reflex save (DC 13) for one round.
Critical Failure -- The light flashes brilliantly for a moment and then extinguishes, dazing the caster for one round.
and then Patronus Charm [Charm] Incantation: "Expecto Patronum" Spellcraft DC: 25 Range: Medium (100ft + 10 ft./level) Duration: 1 round + Charisma modifier Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No Effect: This difficult charm summons a patronus, a silvery spirit creature created from the positive feelings of the caster. The patronus will fight on the caster's behalf. It will not attack allies. Only a caster acting of her own accord can summon a patronus.

+5 -- The patronus remains for +1 round.
+10 -- The patronus remains 1½x longer.
+15 -- The patronus remains 2x as long.
Critical Success -- The patronus is corporeal. It may fight both physical and insubstantial creatures with equal ability.
Critical Failure -- The caster is overwhelmed by feelings of doubt and hopelessness. He must take a -2 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks until the end of his next action.
One thing I must add is that I'm developing a Feat that allows a wizard/witch to score an automatic "threat" on a Spellcraft check with one particular spell. Harry would have this feat with the patronus charm, for example. An invaluable link for anyone who wants an excellent Harry Potter resource is the Harry Potter Lexicon
