Has anyone played d20 Mafia?

Last night, for various reasons, our normal game was cancelled; unfortunately, we did not have enough players for our normal 'default' game, Eberon. *sigh*
However, something very cool happened. Our Eberon GM whipped out a copy of Complete Mafia for d20 and we proceeded to roll up characters.
I must say, we had a pretty awesome time - even considering the complete and utter lack of prep time on his part. (This was also, I might add, the first time I've *played* d20 modern, as opposed to having read this book or that)
Anyone have any experiences with this they'd be willing to share?

I use Hogshead Press' The Mob supplement for Mob-like things in my d20 Modern game. It has a complete game system within it, but I don't use the PC rules. However, the details of crime and underworld organization are excellent. The Mob doesn't always have to be the Mafia, it can be any clandestine organization.

In my case it provides endless options for bad guys. My players are not police, but they will often take on a vigilante mission just for the kicks. It gives them more latitude with deadly force. They haven't done anything really note-worthy to the local mobs yet, but they'll be crossing that line any day now...

How dated is the material - is it for modern only, or can it be used for earlier games like the 20s?

The Mob supplement was good for me in that it detailed how mafia/organized crime works and some of its history. While time has marched on, the crimes remain the same... prostitution, extortion, blackmail, money laundering, gambling, smuggling, etc are all as appropriate today as in the 20's and probably will be well in to the future. The book itself could be used to play an entirely stand alone d20 Mob based game (in fact that's what it is designed for). I stole from it to use with d20 Modern. But as I said, I don't use the classes, feats or skills described in the book, just the structure. If I got serious about fleshing out a crime organization, then I'd use some of the "racket" rules. I'm also keeping it around in case any of my players develop a team of thugs--great rules for that.

So yeah, 1920's would work as well as 2005 and probably 2105...

My booth at GTS was next to the guys from Living Room Games. They had a mock-up of the Mafia book there and it looked pretty sweet. They do good work, so if you're interested in running a mob game and like d20, I'm sure it'll be right up your alley.
