or
"can't win, don't try, got it"

I haven't, been too busy with d20 open calls, but a buddy has submitted 3 articles. 2 to Dungeon, one of which was just bought, and the third was an article on shamans that was supposed to appear in Dragon 309 but that wasn't anticipating Paizo buying the magazine, or 3.5 being released, so I don't know if we'll ever see it.

At last count, I have had 49 articles published in Dragon and 8 adventures published in Dungeon. Of course, one of the Dragon "articles" was an adventure, so maybe I should count it as 48/9. In any case, the vast majority of these were in the 2E days.

I had about three submission ideas to Dungeon shot down before I finally got "Challenge of Champions" through (issue 58), and nearly a dozen Dragon articles shot down before they finally went with "The False Undead" (issue 198). I would recommend to Magic Slim that it's quite likely he's taking the wrong message from his situation. You never know, the next idea you submit could be the one that makes it through, and once you've been published it only gets easier from there!

I've had three adventures published in Dungeon. Not quite as prolific as Johnathan. :)

I'd also recommend persistence. I have had my share of rejections also, and the best thing to do is to try, try again. Also, look at what is being published in the magazine, listen to what the editor wants (check out the writers' guidelines), and make sure your prose is clear and direct.

I've had three articles published in Dragon since the advent of 3E, and another has just been purchased. I heartily recommend plugging away at ideas and submitting proposals...sometimes the editor might not like your idea as is but just might ask for something else (as was the case with "Open Skies").

"Fractious Factions" in Dragon #287
"Open Skies: The Silver Strike Guild" in Dragon #307
"Dweomered Dragonscales" in Dragon #308

My Traveller article “Space-Age Espionage” was published in issue #120, way back when I was in high school. Somewhere (crosses fingers) I still have a letter from then-editor Roger Moore congratulating me. At the time the pay for an article was rather impressive on the high-school scale of money.

Recently I have nice rejection emails from Jesse Decker. And I do mean nice - there's always the fear that you'll get something like "hey kid, keep your trash out of my inbox!"

With some luck (and some get-up-off-my-ass) I'll have more articles sometime in the future...
