Hellfire Gem This deep red, egg-sized gem looks much like an uncut ruby at first glance, but closer observation reveals what appears to be dim flames dancing within. The flames are enticing, yet disturbing to watch. Unbeknownst to most, these gems contain the essence of hellfire, a dark and terrible form of energy found only in the nine hells (A DC 25 Knowledge (the Planes) check is required to identify the gem). These gems can't be made. They are formed from hellfire itself, by some unknown and seemingly random natural process in the deepest and most terrible parts of the nine hells. These gems are extremely rare and are jealously sought after by those hellfire warlocks that know of their existence. Powerful fiends have been known to entice hellfire warlocks to their service in exchange for one of these gems, but occasionally one is discovered or stolen and falls into mortal hands. Any hellfire warlock (or other character) who owns one of these gems had best keep it a secret, or he risks being hunted by those who desire its power (or worse, the mighty fiend that wants its gem back). While holding one of these gems, a hellfire warlock can use his Hellfire Blast and Hellfire Shield abilities without suffering a point of consitution damage. This also allows those who have no consitution score or are somehow immune to constitution damage to call upon these terrible abilities. Even warlocks who have no levels in the hellfire warlock class can attempt to call upon the gem's powers. Doing so requires a DC 30 Use Magic Device check and is a free action. Success grants the weilder the ability to use a +2d6 hellfire blast or +2d6 hellfire shield. Members of other classes can attempt to use the hellfire shield ability (as if cast by a hellfire warlock with an invoker level equal to half their character level) but not the hellfire blast ability (since they have no eldritch blast to augment). Strong Evocation; CL 15th; Price 50,000 gp. These gems can also be set in a specially crafted amulet: Hellfire Amulet This amulet consists of an adamantine chain and has a setting for a hellfire gem. The amulet is inscribed with special, small runes that glow dimly while a hellfire gem is set in it. While wearing one of these amulets, the wearer gains all of the benefits of a Greater Chasuble of Fell Power (CA, p. 148) as well as the hellfire gem set in it (if any). Moderate Evocation (Strong Evocation when set with a Hellfire Gem); CL 12th (15th if set with a Hellfire Gem); Craft Wondrous Item, creator must be able to invoke eldritch blast and hellfire blast and must have at least 12 ranks in Knowledge (The Planes); Price 22,000 gp. The hellfire gem is not included in this cost.
