(Spoilers on the original 3.0 Adventure Path, if that matters anymore :)) My crew is about to finish the Bastion of Broken Souls after 9 years. It's been a long ride, including conversion from 3.0 to 3.5 rules and ascension to 21st level. In the final battle, Ammet the demon is wielding a major artifact called Helltongue, a +5 mighty whip that has 3 strands. For each strand that hits, a portion of the target's soul is transferred to the wielder and the target gains negative levels, while the wielder gains temporary hit points. I'm wondering if someone with death ward is protected from this powerful weapon. It's a major artifact, so I don't know if that has any bearing on protections from spells. Since having some kind of death ward armor is practically standard for such high level characters, or at least it is in our campaigns, it seems like this artifact is useless against a 4th level spell / +2 market bonus attribute. And, although a Ammet's death throes destroys all items it carries, would that automatically mean Helltongue is destroyed, or are artifacts different? (Also, if you're wondering, I'm ruling that Blasphemy will not work in the Bastion, or else the end battle would be unwinnable with a party wipe from Ashardalon's 40 hit dice).
