Help a guy out - Magic to find stolen objects

First Post
The players in my game have recently come across a stolen necklace it was stolen from it's rightful owner and the players were already planning on taking it so they stole it from the theives. Now this necklace is worth enough to the owner in value and pride that he'll spare no expense to ensure it's recovery and that means magic.

I'm not sure what the best way for the owner to go about finding it would be.

I'm very open to suggestions. How would you handle this?

Locate Object would certainly be useful, but has limited range.

I wonder...they may be able to Scry with the object as the target. I'm thinking this tactic would work on objects & locations, not just creatures, but don't have the books handy to double-check.

An array of other Divination spells would be useful. At the low end, there is Augury: "Is the necklace I seek still in this city?" "Does so-and-so have the necklace I seek?" etc.

Discern Location is the way to go.

If that's unavailable try Locate Object. Limited range, but if it's still in the same town/city you should find it soon enough.

Geoff.

Also contacting all jewelers in the town and the neighboring ones would help. Putting up posts asking for its return with a reward..

just a few mundane options.

If the lower level divinations don't work, Discern Location is the spell you need. "Nothing short of a Mind Blank spell or the direct intervention of a deity keeps you from learning the exact location of a single individual or object." Clr 8, Sor/Wiz 8

Assuming you could find someone willing to hire out to cast an 8th level spell, that'll run you at least 80 x 15 = 1,200 gp

Thanks guys. The necklace is worth almost 10,000gp so spending 1,200gp to have discern location isn't really a big deal. Besides the person in question isn't really happy that he's been robbed so the money isn't an issue....
