Help! Boss CR Related Issue

Heres the deal, i'm having a hard time figureing out the CR of a hand built duche style boss.

I built him of the lvl 8 Rouge NPC data provided in the DMG, but to tie him into my over all story plot i had him possed by a demonic sorcerer with up to 4th lvl spells. Giving how important the boss was to the over all story line I made it difficult for them to escape by placeing a an unjumpable cazem near the boss room and the only means to get accros was a nerrow path way.

Though i did relize before hand that he was over powered and would kill the party with ease i changed my battle stratgy when the entered the room. Instead of having him out right kill the party i made it hard for them to hit him. Having him cast a Fire Shield on himself, ultimatly forcing them to use thier brains instead of thier swords. He only used 3 attack spells the rest where defensive, aimed at making it hard for them to take him down.

Basically I used these spells

fire shield
majic missle aimed at 3 party members and an illusion that the beguiler put up (requiring interaction to relize it was an illusion, the boss failed his roll)
Blur (failed completly)
another spell aimed at taking down hit chances on hte warrior(failed agian)
Blur (failed agian)
at about this piont he got taken down to 5 hp so i had him cast greater invisability
Burning hands
and then a last ditch attempt with majic missle aimed right at the warrior

I was dealing with 5 players: Begiuler, ranger, warrior, cleric and a dragonborn paladin. They did minimal ranged damage for the most part, wittling him down very slowly. But he never took any of them down beyond 4 hp and that was the ranger, who keep disrupting his spells.

my players claim it was challange and my problem player tried to goed me into giving everyone 8+ CR experiance for the battle. Personnaly I don't see it as a super hard battle just something that made them think to get around his defenses. It was a little slow cause they couldn't manage to kill him in 2 hits. Thought they where creative during the battle which was intresting to see as apossed to the hum drum hack and slash.

I was just wondering if i could get some advice on this from a GM's prespective. I put his CR at 6 cause no one was downed or desied or any of the other really annoying and detrimental stuffs that waste supples & money, he was just a pain in the arse to hit.

So he's effectively a gestalt rogue8/sorc8? I would say cr6 as well. Classed npcs tend to be weaker than their cr would otherwise indicate. A human rogue8 is clearly weaker than a babau (cr6), so cr5 for him seems about right.

I am not sure how much tougher the sorc part should make him. Your spells seemed key in making the fight more challenging, so I guess a case could be made to raise his cr to 6. He now seems comparable to the aforementioned babau. :)

~nods~ I figured it was CR6, just wans't 100% sure about it, it was deffinetly a challange for them, but not suicidal XD

but thanks for the rundown on that, it will help alot in the future :D

I would have said CR 7, except for the fact that you in-game-nerfed him by not allowing him to attack full out (if I understand you right - If he can cast 4th level spells he should have opened up with a fireball, not magic missiles. That is you made him an 8th level sorceror but didn't let him act as much more than a 4th level sorceror). What level are the party? I seem to have missed that.

And I applaud him for not giving in to that temptation and continuing to use his magic to augment his roguish capabilities. :D
