Help Build our Stronghold

Ok so currently I'm the DM of a two person campaign set in a heavily modified version of 16th century Europe. The group consists of a Rogue2/Wiz. 10 (PC), a Bard 9/GateCrasher 3/Sublime Chord 1 (NPC), and an 11th level PC that is a custom campaign specific version of a Renaissance man/engineer type (think really smart, a ton of skills, and feats but no spellcasting and weak fighting). Recently the party just finished saving the city of Bern from a particularly nasty attack of demonicly augmented ghouls.

Here's where you guys come in, the party now has control over the city and they want to build a stronghold of their own within the city. Any good ideas for what they might want to include or create for the stronghold ? I'm more interested in unique ideas that help to maintain a certain amount of late Middle Ages/ Early Renaissance flavor and feel rather than super crazy magical contraptions. Some things to keep in mind are:

1. The city of Bern is pretty sizable, and is surrounded on three sides by a river
2. Magic is extremely limited, the two casters in the party are pretty powerful because of this but getting magical components has gotten tough
3. The level of technology in the campaign has been kept pretty close to what was present historically
4. The residents of Bern are extremely grateful to the party but the city is also in shambles due to the attacks
5. The location that the party has chosen to build on is in the center of the city, located on the site of the city's impressive clocktower. This clocktower is situated over the gates through the old city walls.

So there you have it, we are playing tonight any good ideas I could bring to the table with me to suggest to them would be appreciated.

Clockwork, Steam and Hydraulics are suitably renaisance aaaand totally cool - use them as defensive mechanisms (high -pressure steam vents) and for transport (elevators et al)
