In one of our campaigns we don't have access to a high level cleric (yet, one of the PC's is Clr 8) but we have a circlet of reincarnation 1/week so this situation is becoming a constant for us. The dwarf is now a centaur, the halfling a badger, the elf was a black bear but used a wish to return to elf form (although the player almost got screwed over - she wished to become what she was 'originally'. I groaned and the DM got an evil glint - and then decided to be nice). Due to the fact that you retain your previous mental faculties the DM decided that the you retained your original favored class and racial skill bonuses, it's how you were brought up. The centaur retained dwarven favored class and skill bonuses. The character retained his memory, INT, WIS, CHA. We did make the character now use the ECL for centaurs but the DM boosted the charcters XP total so that he retained his current level and would have to deal with the higher ECL from that point on. The badger-cum-halfling is the party rogue and we had to have special thieves tools made for him to use disable and pick lock rolls. They basically are strap mounted over his claws. He takes one minute to get them one himself or another character can help him and it takes two rounds. He takes one step longer to perform these actions, i.e. one minute for a one round action, ten minutes for a one minutes action, etc. Neither of these two are casters so we didn't have that problem. That is why the elf used a wish though. Didn't want to have the casting problems.
