Help - Jumi Race

First Post
I just recently got a dnd group, and would love some help making a homebrew race to play as in it! I'm afraid my only knowledge of dnd is one game session and the PHB1, and am not nearly familiar enough with the game to create a balanced race.

The race I would like to use is the Jumi from the playstation game Legend of Mana. Here's the relevant information:
Jumi are pretty much like humans. What differentiates them is that their life is tied to a partially exposed stone "core" embedded into their chest. Damage to this core damages the jumi, but as long as this core remains undamaged the jumi are ageless and essentially immortal. Removing the core kills the jumi. In the game, the tears of the jumi produce "teardrop crystals" which are the only way to restore a damaged core, and can even bring life back to a core that has been removed - but the jumi race has lost the ability to cry. In addition cores have strong innate magical energy causing the jumi to be hunted by mages, leaving the jumi on the brink of extinction.
Jumi traditionally work in pairs - the "Knight" who protects the "Guardian" and the "Guardian" who heals the "Knight". I imagine Knights would fall into Defender roles and Guardians would fit Leader roles.

Things I would like to see make it into the dnd race are the dependence on the stone cores, and the duality of the Knight and Guardian roles. Maybe allow for a choice between +2str/con for Knights and +2wis/cha for Guardians?
They share average heights and weights with the human race, medium sized, normal vision, 6 speed.

I know this is a lot to ask for, I just really don't know how to go about this on my own. A huge thank you in advance to anyone kind enough to help me with this.

In case it might help, here's a homebrew jumi race for some past edition or other of dnd:

Sounds to me like you could just use the warforged mechanics out of the box, and reskin it as the race you want.

In 4e warforged can be healed by anyone. This is more of a balance issue than anything else. You could always fluff it, whoever is in the party healing your character has a supply of tears he uses. When you second wind or take a short rest, you might have your own stash that you use.

Warforged abilities seem like a good fit, they don't need to eat or drink, and need only a short amount of rest, and warforged abilities and powers fit the needs more or less as well.

So, use warforged stats, call it a Jumi.
