[help] looking for "typical" 28/30 mm minis

First Post
The DMG states that the typical conscript is "a 1st level commoner wearing padded armor carrying a wooden shield and a half-spear.

And that a typical Soldier wears "studded leather armor and carries either a Small or Medium-sized martial weapon (default to Longsword) and a wooden shield or a longbow."

I am looking for such miniatures in 28 or 30mm form for my altered Chainmail rules for larger skirmishes.

Chainmail does offer the conscript...but I don't want to buy a bunch of minis that look exactly the same.

And I do want other (and perhaps cheaper) alternatives besides Warhammer. Reaper miniatures seem to have what I'm looking for but I'd like other choices.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Ulrick

The last time I bought minis was 15 years ago (wow! time flies!) however, I will give you a bump. Is Ral Partha around? Have you tried e-bay? Wizards.com also has a mini forum. You might want to check that out.

Plastic miniature sets from Games Workshop have figures that match that description. The 'Empire Militia' set in particular has a good deal of non plate wearing human fighters.

Another good company to look for them would be Reaper Miniatures (www.reapermini.com). While their online Catalog is laid out only slightly less organized than say, a two year old on uppers, they do produce 'packs' of 3 or 4 miniatures that are common in game's stores for a good price, and I've found some town guard style miniatures among them.

Ral is pretty much a going concern right now, though it looks like they will be returning to making miniatures/paint in 2002, likely the Summer. Wheather they make their own miniatures, or ones for that abysmally horrid MageKnight series (The miniatures are absolutely awful in that series. Very, very badly disproportionate). We'll have to see if Ral returns to the frey with a good line though.

Thanks everyone!

Mr. Haggerty: I did check out those Men-at-Arms and swordsmen by Reaper. Those spearmen look great...as do those town guardsmen. But do you (or anybody else) know if they are roughly the same size as Reaper, Warhammer, or Chainmail minis? I haven't purchased any RAFM minis before.

One thing that annoys me is the size difference of miniatures from company to company. I prefer larger minis because I like the detail of them. Ex. Reaper claims to be 25mm, but their human minis are larger that warhammer minis...which I heard are 28mm.

What's the difference?

I've bookmarked the Discount Hobby site. It looks like I'll be going there quite a bit. I really like how for some of their merhcandise they have rotating pictures so you can see it from all sides. I'm drooling.

Thanks again.

Reaper minis are 30mm, if I'm not mistaken, making them slightly bigger than you're average mini. They look awfully nice, though.

RAFM minis are awfully similar to the old Ral Parthas... They use same scale at 25mm, making them a little smaller than most minis. But personally, it's my favorite mini scale.

The Ral Parthas will be very hard to find, since the company went out of business and was bought out by WizKids Games, the same company that makes Mage Knight figurines. They haven't produced any real fantasy minis yet, but there's rumors that they'll restart the old Ral Partha line sooner or later.

Also, GW's boxed game "Mordheim" comes with figs that would be good conscripts - little to no armor, and a good variety of weapons. Since they're multipart models, you can have plenty of variety. If you have a game store nearby with instore gaming, maybe you can ask around the mini gamers to see if anyone wants to ditch the Mordheim human sprues cheaply.

It might be noted that these same human sprues are sold in the Empire Militia boxed set.

Discount Hobby (aka Dragglestown.com) has a 50% off MSRP liquidation sale going on all Ral Partha minis. I picked up some nice stuff dirt cheap a few months back. It's a good company with great prices and fast shipping!

Reaper and most other companies are now using 28-30mm "heroic" scale for their minis. Discount Hobby's site tells you the scale each mini is sculpted for in the figure's description, along with who sculpted it and how much you save off regular retail price (typically 10-20% off everything, everyday).
