And then there's the Stealth option... Regardless of which character class you decide to go with, putting it in a plain brown wrapper can't hurt. I'd go with some form of an Awakened animal, with character levels. As such, it will have 3D6 INT (not so good an idea for a Wiz/Sor), will be able to speak and understand Common, and a number of other languages equal to its new INT Bonus, and will have some extra hit dice. Then you can add the class levels. Careful consideration of the base animal, racial skill bonuses, natural abilities, and class should be taken... A Warhorse who is also a Fighter/Rogue would give him more HPs, fighting ability, Feats, sneak attack, Uncanny Dodge, and even Trapfinding... but Disable Device would probably be a problem! Add in some Barbarian, and (s)he's even faster! A kitty-cat with Rogue levels would rock at Hide & Move Silently! And, of course, a DUCK is your all-around, all-terrain NPC Cohort, as it can fly, swim, and even waddle about on land! (Its attack ability sucks, though!) Even an Awakened tiny viper has its uses... Make it a Rogue, give it a lot of Hide & Move Silently, with its size bonuses to Hide, sneak attack, and poison... It has its uses! Pseudo-Dragons are also nice! Maybe add some Ranger/Rogue levels on top of that... Think about what abilities and skills you want and need, and what "race" of animal best suits them. Add in the appropriate class abilities to suit! My Ranger currently has a Warhorse who is his Animal Companion. If he had Leadership, and the GM let him find a friendly Druid with Awaken (and assuming the horse agreed), he'd give that up to make his warhorse an intellugent Ranger/Rogue with Hide, Move Silently, Survival (and Tracking!), Jump, Swim, and Climb. Guarding the horses would no longer be a problem, I think! :]
