Well, there is a difference between "converting" and "re-imagining." Both are great options, but there are copyright issues that have to be taken into consideration. WotC wrote a little article on how to convert stuff. Basically, they want to protect the integrity and flavor of their products as much as possible, so they came up with a list of dos and don'ts for converting old stuff...modules in particular, but also monsters and accessories. The rule of thumb (pre-4E, anyway...not sure what might have changed) is that you can only change game mechanics...you can't change flavor elements like names, places, plot events, and so forth. You could insert the SRD stats for the skeletons, but you can't decide to use zombies instead of skeletons. The railroading plot, the NPCs, and the puzzles and their consequences will all have to stay, I'm afraid. But you can use the updated 4E stats for monsters and traps, instead of the old ones, and you can use new rules mechanics for things like ability checks, skills, and spells. But of course, if you aren't planning on sharing your conversion with the general public, all bets are off. What happens at your table stays at your table, so to speak. :) If you are going to do a "re-imagining" of it, and you want to still be able to share it with the public at large (who will no doubt thank you for your hard work), you can create a whole new adventure based on the original module. Something alogn the lines of "Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil," where the basic setting and characters were borrowed from the original but massive changes were made to the story so that it was a completely different adventure. I'm not sure how much help it will be, but I wrote a 3.5E conversion for that module a while back. [S]You can find it here.[/S] Apparently the conversion library is down...I'll see if I have it at home, and I'll tack it onto this thread.
