Tome and Blood had "elemental savant", but it was about as boring and flavourless class as you could imagine, and was predicated on "energy substitution", a feat which our gaming group has eliminated as preposterous :) Pyrotechnics must be one of the few spells left with more than one use! The fact that you can target either Fort save or Will save depending on which varant you use, and the possibility of blinding everyone in a 120ft radius at long range... the time it broke up the huge cavalry charge nicely was most excellent. Of course, the first few times it was used the PC's hadn't arranged code-words or anything, and sometimes my own side got a bit blinded ;) We've used a combination of grandfathering, swapping and natural wastage. The old endure elements was so central to the character that we kept it in as a "new" spell called Defy Elements. Burning hands doesn't get used at all now since I've got scorching ray and fireball (hah!). We were using the Forgotten Realms "Combustion" as a 2nd level spell, but scorching ray worked much better and so that was a straight swap. The characters spells are chosen on a "fire and charm" theme, so I allow myself to choose enchantement spells as well as fire spells. I used to have "Enlarge spell" but since it was rendered useless for my burning hands (the only reason I had it) the DM has let me swap it out. The character background? She was a red headed stepchild, sold into servitude as a cooks maid in a nobles house. Fiery and full of personality she was regularly beaten and made to feel miserable. As she reached her teenage years she made up little "charms" that she said to keep from getting burnt when tending the fires (defy elements) and when she needed to light fires or keep them going (burning hands). Eventually by force of personality she worked her way up to head of a kitchen, before leaving to sign on as head cook on a wagon train across the steppes. Most of her early adventures were in grasslands and she had a habit of setting light to stuff and standing amidst the conflagration :) When anyone asks her what kind of adventurer she is, she always says "Cook". In terms of skills, she normally divides her skill points evenly between concentration, Profession(Cook) and Intimidation. Since Intimidation was made a class skill the DM has allowed me to gain full value for the skill points I sank into it (since I was paying double before ;)). The spare skill point now goes on a bit of spellcraft here and there, although she is considering dropping the Profession as she is getting more heavily into adventuring. She is fiery and passionate, she loves burning enemies. She has a variety of cooking related catchphrases "I've put spicier things than you on my sausages!" "I've put wierder things than you in a stew" You can imagine the drill! Oh yes - her only melee weapon is a good iron frying pan which normally dangles from her waist. 1d4 damage, she gets +1 to hit with it because it is big (and the DM smiles on character based choices!). As you can probably tell, I'm having a ball playing her. Our next adventure is this Sunday (yay!) Cheers
