One of the joys of a role play heavy campaign is having to make difficult decisions in situations where ethical, material and fraternal concerns pull your character in all sorts of contradictory directions. It is in this spirit that I would like some advice. I have a character, Mourne, who is a grey elf, neutral Aristo 1 / Conjurer 5 / Alienist 5. He is very smart, lacks social grace, and thinks that his own rather mad truth, rather than authority, makes the laws by which he should act. He is currently building a large tower in a small city where he intends to conduct all sorts of research into monstrous things from other planes, and build a museum to display the various critters he as captured or killed over the years. He is also pathologically afraid of insects. One of his fellows, Ishtar, is a paladin 11, who is a holy warrior of an persecuted ethnic minority. He is interested in serving the best interests of his people and his god (Bahumut) (as you would expect). He is currently engaged in hunting a red dragon which is occupying land sacred to his people. He is righteous and judicious, willing to endure some degree of personal moral and ethical compromise in order to serve the best interests of his people. Generally the two get on well, but their world views are radically different and a great thing about the current campaign is the tension between the two, who are both fairly committed to maintaining their friendship – they need each other. I have a few ideas for things which Mourne could do to draw out these tensions (for the sake fun in the game). One involves the current state of the Paladin – he’s dead – and we're on our way to visit his high priest to get him back. We’re currently broke (a uber-Rust Monster destroyed most of our front line characters’ gear. See the monster here ), and I though that a robbery might need to be carried out to get the 10,000 needed for the resurrection. The Paladin is then brought back, in time to deal with the Dragon, but via un-lawful acts. The other thing is Mourne’s fear of insects. He is currently researching a magic virus to kill off all the insects that live anywhere near his home. It is contagious necromantic disease. This will probably have result in Druids and the like suddenly taking a greater interest in Mourne, his friends and his actions. Will the Paladin step in to help? Any other ideas for difficult situations?
