If any of my players are out there, you know how long it will take for you to die the death of ten thousand screams and a dash of mayonnaise. That's right, I'll use the mayo. Some spoiler space, just in case. That's enough of that. I have a PBEM campaign that's slowly gone downhill (long story) and I've decided to wrap it up and do something new. But I'm stuck between some desires that don't seem to go together too well. I think I want something in the 15th level range. I like the idea of being able to get creative and smart with the monsters and not be simultaneously signing PC death warrants and that seems like a fairly guilt-free place to go nuts within reason. I want to do this almost surely in FR, because however much I love Eberron I'd want to run it as-is or work up to 15th before I really started blowing up the world and all of that. The pacing constraints on a PBEM limit the viability of working the way up. I kinda-sorta want to run a 3e conversion of Return to the Tomb of Horrors. It's big, saving the world goodness with a lot of creative sadism and neat ideas. I get giggly just thinking about this one trap that crushes PCs like a giant sphincter. But, I also want to do a game that involves the Underdark in some meaningful way and RttToH is a mostly above-ground and off-plane kind of adventure. I just can't see throwing Skull City or some of the other locals underground and having it make as much sense. I also think the coolness factor of seeing a building shaped like a giant skull sticking out of a hill is higher in the light of day where the PCs might feel things are relatively normal than deep underground where they expect the nasty, alien, and surreal. On top of this, I would really like to involve the Phaerimm in some kind of way. They're a cool enemy I haven't ever used before. I mean, sadistic floating magical windsocks with claws and teeth! I've got no idea what they're doing to get the party's attention yet, and no clue how they would fit in with RttToH. I have similar desires for some of the other Underdark critters, but I'm liking Phaerimm as major badguys. And of course I'd like to throw in elements of PC backstory, but I wont know any of those until I have actual PCs in my hot little hands. Any help? Ideas on integrating this stuff?
