Hey all. I am thinking of using a alternate version of the Powerie, aka the "Bloody Caps." I was thinking of running a game in my "dwarven campaign" in which the heroes are called to check in on a mining community a few days hard walk through the mountains. This community would be a satellite of the main dwarven bastion, thus under the protection of the heroes (who are either children of the Lord or his direct servants). When they get there they find chaos and death. A good number of dwarves are dead, but there's still some alive. However they have all become mad (as in crazy) and have taken to wearing a cap that looks to be dipped in the blood of thier fellow dwarves. I was thinking that a twist might be to have them infected with a "fey parasite" that causes them to go mad, but that they can be saved. This puts the heroes in a quandry, they really can't "just kill them" because they are sworn to protect the dwarves, yet they can't just let them do whatever. Logically they have to exorcise the fey-parasite out of the infected dwarves. So, what I am looking for is a way to work out this posession and the needed ritual or means at which to free the dwarves. This should be one of those things that the heroes find a great challenege in that they have to beat-up those they have to protect to save themselves, but that they shouldn't kill because they are their people. The enmy lies within thier friends. A different approach: As for how they got infected, perhaps a strange old traveling sales man sold some of the redcaps to some of the locals. The locals fall under a chaos/bloodthirst curse that's infectious. Ideas? (I hope I was clear, sorry if I wasn't.)
