D&D 3E/3.5 Help me with my 3.5 ranger

Here we go ya'll:

Avari'aure
Half-elf Ranger 3
S: 17
D: 16
C: 15
I: 15
W: 13
Ch:10

I chose the two weapon fighting "path"

Character feats: Point blank shot, Precise shot
Current Ranger Bonus Feats: Two Weapon Fighting, Track, Endurance

Current important equipment:MW Quarterstaff, Chain Shirt, Quiver of Ehlonna, Wand of Cure Light Wounds

Skills: Don't remeber exactly off hand but lots of ranks in Climb, Hide, Move Silent, Survival, Spot and Tumble. A few ranks in Listen, Swim, Ride, Knowledge (Dungeoneering)

Aling: CG

The concept I'm working on is a well-rounded, fast-warrior type. I want a character that is good at several things and has an ace in the hole, I don't really care about being the "best" archer or the "best" fighter.

The character is currently out for vengence against an evil group of mercenaries and probably will be for quite some time.

All WoTC supplements are up for grabs: MotW, S&F, etc....

Please give me some ideas for feats, prestige classes, mutli-class options, must-have equipment, etc... I don't want to play an arcane archer, but I'm open to pretty much anything else.

Thanks!

Stay a straight Ranger...

By 10th, you'll be an extra +6 damage to humans.
Pick the Lt. warhorse as your companion.... for increased combat speed.

Might I suggest the Longsword/spiked lt. shield of Bashing (w/ Imp. shield bash feat) for your 2-weapon fighting... Rangers need the AC help.

YMMV

Mike

The only problem with the shield idea is that it won't allow him to use his bow (which, according to Feat selection, he likes to use a lot).

I like the quarterstaff idea. Take two weapon defence as your next feat if you find yourself hit too much in melee combat.

BTW, I'd suggest a level or two of Druid (if you don't mind an alignment switch). Shilelagh that quarterstaff for some evil butt-kicking goodness!

Oh yeah, don't forget to take a miniature giant space hamster as your animal companion! :D

"Go for the eyes Boo. GO FOR THE EYES! ERAGH!"

"Action.... adventure...the stuff of legend. right, Boo?"

TWF ranger w/quarterstaff = cool.

Though you could still take Rapid Shot if you want ranged feats (I prefer volume to accuracy early on for some reason).

Another thought might be Power Attack -- useful when you want to switch out of TWF mode and use the quarterstaff as a 2H weapon, and get the additional damage.

I've always seen the Dodge/Mobility/Spring Attack chain as fitting well with a staff-wielder, too (must be too many martial arts movies or something).

Have fun!

Quarterstaff is a cool weapon for a ranger in my opinion too.

Images of Robin Hood Fighting Little John and all that. And also Daffy the Duck vs. Porky the Pig.

Somewhere around 10th level, I'm probably going to switch off to double-sword - but not until I can afford a nice magical one.

d12-

You might also want to consider thrown weapons, to get the benefit of both your melee and ranged feats in different circumstances. F'rinstance, thrown daggers with point blank shot and quick draw make an effective combo, since you can close to melee and still be effective.

I am glad to see that some other folks are playing Rangers! I think the 3.5 changes helped... LOL

PrC's - if you want well rounded - you really ought to just stay with Ranger it does everything you want - good combat, good skills and spells for those aces in the hole. However, if you are set on a PrC, you might consider fleetrunner of Elhonna. You get a bunch of cool abilities but give up warrior BAB. The class is in the Dragon Mag issue on clerics & deities. A couple other class options would be to intermix in some barb, rogue, or fighter for your character depending on your preference. If you want fast warrior type, barb is nice for the speed boost and obviously the rage. Rogue is nice for the SA and uncanny dodge (but now that requires a significant investment). Fighter is always good if you want to focus a bit more on feat versatility.

Bracers of archery are a must for you as well as a mighty bow and a str boosting item. You mentioned something about switching to double sword later on. While it has is uses, you might just want to stick with two short swords or the quaterstaff. Of course a doubly enchanted throwing/returning/vorpal +3 double sword with rapid shot, PBS, WF, WS, IC, PS, FS, and stoneskin is always damn cool too. ;)

I agree. That way you can use your two-weapon fighting feats with ranged weapons, and get your strength bonus to damage without having to pay for an expensive mighty bow. But don't use daggers. Use throwing axes, javelins, or spears.

You'll want a Quiver of Ehlonna to pull this off. That way you can carry throwing weapons, bows, arrows, and even a spare quarterstaff or two without becoming encumbered.

You definitely also want to have your a and someone with the Craft Magical Arms and Armor feat collaborate on permanently enchanting your staff with the Shillelagh spell.
