Okay, my friend is thinking of starting a D&D game, and we've played other d20 games, but not D&D, so could people please list the settings out there that are 3.5 (or have conversion documents) and are still currently being supported.
Also, if it is being published, can you only put in things with a firm release date.
I would also appreciate a mention of the publisher.
The ones I know of to date are:

Forgotten Realms (WotC)
Eberron (WotC)
Ravenloft (SSS)
Dragonlance (somebody)

I realise that many people have their own preferences, but if you have to say why you like something, please try and keep it down to a line or two. I'd rather discussion of relative merits went elsewhere...

Midnight (FFG), easy to convert it o 3.5
Slaine (Mongoose), again it'd be easyt to convert
Greyhawk, since the base PHB is basically set for it

I like Scarred Lands myself. Most of the books are almost half the cost of WOTC books and you can get special deals on White Wolf's Website. They also have their very own Monster Manuals which is nice to spring on people that have played for years and know the capabilities of most monsters by heart.
Midnight looks REALLY good for an epic style game. I'm talking epic in scope, not epic level characters.
I was also always partial to Ravenloft which is also published by White Wolf.
Skull & Bones is a great one if you want a Pirate setting with Voodoo as the magic system. It meshes well with the Freeport setting. Both are published by Green Ronin.
Greyhawk is your best bet though as there are no additional rules involved and it is supposed to be the "Core" setting for D&D.
