help on book series titles/author

I've been going through a nostalgia stage, trying to read some of the books I loved when I was in high school. I've found most of them, but there's this one series that eludes me.

It was about a boy who stole a dragon egg and raised the dragon in the wild. He entered said dragon into the arena, and it turned out the dragon was a mute. Near the end of the series, the boy was bathed in dragon blood and was able to gain some draconic senses.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks.

Just handed that book to my kid... I enjoyed the first one, but didn't get far into the second... don't remember why.
