Or something valuable, and useful but dangerous that draws the fiends from the desert towards the party constantly. Or a valuable but easily recognised item of one of the dead villagers that if seen by one of their loved ones would be instantly recognised and would bring hell down on them. Fun, useful, dangerous story hooks ... or chump change. Your decision.
