D&D 5E Help turning a former PC in a Revenant enemy

To make a long story short, we had a former friend playing with us and he was using a Paladin. It is obvious that he is no longer going to play with us due to his job so his character has sort of been shelved indefinitely. The last time we saw his character, he was knocked out and had failed 1 death saving throw. We were forced to flee so we were unable to save him. I have been considering bringing him back as a Revenant to hunt the party down for not trying to save him or not going back for him. First question is, is this a good enough reason to turn him into a Revenant? If not, I can find a different way. I could bring him back as a brainwashed enemy and guide the party towards killing him. Of course I can't force them to kill him, but I could likely make it to where they had to.

Anyway, If I did decide to make him a Revenant, would I follow the Monster Manual Revenant version or use the UA:GH version. The UA conversion would allow me to actually use his character still instead of just making a new different Paladin with the same name. The party has leveled up a few levels since we saw him last so I would need to level him up too to make him a threat.

I also don't know the appropriate challenge level to make him. I think the party would make quick work of the MM Revenant. I considered making him the same level as them at first and leveling him up once or twice every time the party defeats him. Sooner or later, he would be near impossible to defeat.
