We are talking about epic levels here, but you are still taking your example way too far. Useing starting gold to get the +5 bonus I personally dont care if they say it was a book or their buddy the local high level caster X, the cost is the same as far as going towards your wealth level. It also doesnt matter 'how' you got your equipment, it still goes off of your wealth guidelines. Also, the part about 'for no benefit' is completely out of place. It may very well be that you saved their whole kingdom single handedly from ultimate destruction and asked for nothing in return. Instead they hired a host of great clerics to bless you with the thanks of their gods and a bunch of exp. That would work perfectly, and possibly even reasonably considering the extreme high level we are dealing with here. Note, I didnt say it was a given, I said it was possible. I could say the same thing about getting the books in the first place. Which is more likely, getting someone to cast the spells on you somehow or having had someone make them in the past (for extra gp and exp cost), store them away, have no one read them, and for the character come along to find them? Depends on the campaign, but in mine it is much easier to find someone who will do it for you in a few minutes rather than spending large amounts of time making something like that. Neither are anywhere near common, but less exp, time, and gp spent seems like the winner ;)
