I recommend dark elf warlock. Just an evil, diabolical little elf. The Int, Cha, and Dex boosts all help you as a Warlock. Take Mortalbane from BoVD for extra blast damage. Take Scribe Scroll so you can scribble in your hate-filled little "journal" and use Imbue Item (Warlock 12) to create whatever spells you want, including healing spells. There's your self-reliance. Maybe even take Craft Wondrous. You'll be very valuable to the party, so they'll have incentive to keep you around. Just don't tell them that everything you create for them, you infuse with a back-door command word that allows you to shut off the magic with a single shout. >:) For invocations, be sure to take summon swarm. In the confined spaces of the Underdark swarms are even deadlier than usual. They're almost useless against things with DR but they ignore saves, AC, and SR and are great for clearing masses of enemies. And the "immune to weapon damage" thing is pretty great. >:) Also take Baleful Utterance to collapse ceilings on people, destroy bridges, or tunnel your way through the rock. If that's not your bailiwick, how about a minotaur? Take the charge-optimizing feats to really take advantage of that 4d6 gore attack. Also, if you go the Large strong guy route, consider investing in grappling. Maybe go Barbarian (bear totem variant from Unearthed Arcana) for free Improved Grapple. Also, read this thread: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=791388 and then ask if your DM will allow Dungeonscape. >:)
