Help with Player's Advantage Article

First Post
I hope you wonderful people can help me out with an article that I'm putting together. It's going to be a 'player's advantage' piece that focuses on rules that players can use to give them that extra edge. Here are some examples of what I'm aiming for:

Classes:

Ranger - this class is too front-loaded. There is no reason not to take a level of Ranger, load up on the goodies and then multi-class into something else.

Feats:

Rapid Shot - this feat is over-powered. Don't pass it up if you are focusing on ranged attacks.

Spells:

Harm - not giving this one a saving throw was a mistake. Add this one to your arsenal.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!!

lemme make sure i'm reading this correctly?

You want a list of what rules we think are broken so that you can exploit them?

Hehe, I like that.

Cleric: This class straight out rocks. It is probably the best class in the game and there is not much of a reason to be anything but a cleric. (If you want to be some other type of character just choose your domains, spells for the day, and feats accordingly)

the idea of this article appals me, but at the same time this advice is redundant. if you're going to be focusing on ranged attacks, then you have to take this feat. otherwise, you can't take any of the other ranged attack feats...

You're thinking of Point Blank Shot, not Rapid Shot.

Heh heh. I don't like to think of it as 'exploit'. I like to think of it as 'utilize to my advantage'.

Funny - but true! Clerics have been the 'best' class in every edition of the game IMHO.

i knew i was going to make an idiot out of myself at SOME point this morning... just thought i might not start till later.

So you want rules that can be min max? How about bribing the DM to use Rule 0 in your favor? Or getting him drunk so he allows thinks he would normally not allow?

Players advantage is something that does not exist. No DM will allow Players to trample all his challenges, so he will just give better challenges. These will have side abilities that are actually far too lethal for lower level PCs. Of course the DM (and the system) will also count on at least some degree of power from the PCs, so doing exactly the opposite would also hinder your progress.

All in all, people who really try to exploit the rules, and are more than averagely (I know...) successful in doing so, are actually being counterproductive.

There are plenty of reasons not to take a level of ranger.

- If you have or intend to have lots of classes, you could run up against the XP penalties for excessive multiclassing. This is particularly important if you're not playing a human.

- A good Fort save is balanced out by poor Ref and Will saves. If you already have a sky-high Fort, it might be a good idea to pay attention to those other saves. Charm and dominate spells can really suck if you're a fighter type.

- The extra attack from TWF is really only worth it if you have lots of sneak attack bonuses, or energy enchantments on both weapons. Otherwise, for pure damage-dealing potential, you're better off with a big two-handed weapon.

- For a focused spellcaster, it's generally a bad idea to take levels in anything that doesn't add to your caster level.

Perhaps what you mean is that having taken a level of ranger, there's little reason to take _additional_ levels in the class. This is something that not many people will argue with, I think.
