Help with turning undead

I was planning on turning undead and controlling a large army of undead.

does anyone have any ideas on what classes make great undead leaders?

also do you think it's logical to be able to gain multiple undead templates, i want 3 at most Mummy, Vampire, Lich, but will settle for lich and vamp.

Dread Necromancer is generally considered the best "Undead Overlord"
Combine that class with the Undead Type and the Undead Leadership feat.

CAN you gain multiple undead templates? If they can be applied to Undead, then yes.
Is it LOGICAL? Undeath itself is illogical... so no, it would not be logical to be any of the three you listed, let alone all of them.

Fell Animate Metamagic feat, Libris Mortis p26 turns any damage dealing spell into an undead making spell. +3 spell level adjustment.

I read somewhere that through spells, feats, and the rod of undead mastery you can control a bit over 17000 HD worth of undead.

does anyone know anything about this?

Most effects do not increase the HD of Undead you may control but instead change it. Those that do increase it do NOT stack.

For example, a 20th level Dread Necromancer with 30 charisma and the Rod of Undead Mastery can control 20(2(4+Cha)) which would be 560 HD of Undead. Any affect that would increase this farther does not stack. Taking the epic feat Undead Mastery would CHANGE the (4+Cha) to (10).

(Dread Necromancer 8 + Rod of Undead Mastery + Undead Leadership (+Extra Followers, etc.) + Class Levels) will give you the most Undead you will ever be able to have pre-epic.

just be sure to make spawns which can then in turn create and control their own spawns. if you control their controller you can effectively control them, which can quickly put you "effectively" above that 360 limit.

Yes, one could have a Cohort with the Undead Leadership feat giving it a Cohort with the Undead Leadership feat, giving it a Cohort with the Undead leadership feat...
There are many shenanigans in D&D that would let you control an entire plane of existence given the choice, but I will avoid going into those...
