Most elves are in these categories:

High Elves (Tolkien shaped elves with more looks than actual Tolkein Power.)

Dark Elves (Evil elves that usually live underground, like spiders and enslave people.)

Wood Elves (just as it sounds. Elves that live in woods.)

Deep or Sea Elves (Elves that live in oceans, seas and other bodies of water.)

That's about all I know.

Weirder Elves Include:

Wild Elf: Sorta like Wood elves, only more war-like and barbaric.

Avriel: Winged elves that live in remote mountains (Detailed in Races of Faerun).

Lythari: Good versions of elven were-wolves (Detailed in Races of Faerun).

Ethereal? Elves: Detailed in a recent Dragon Magazine, elves that withdrew from the material plane to liver on the ethereal plane.

Deset Elves: Wild elves adapted to live in desert regions.

Athas Elves: Elves from the 2nd ed Dark Sun game world (revived in a recent Dragon/Dungeon issue. also has nice home on the web someplace). Very different from the traditional elves (shorter lived, good runners).

Non D&D sources of Elfdom:

Some guy named Tolkein wrote a few books about elves (note the Simerrillion-not spelled remotely close). Most important is that he actually created an Elven Language.

Elric: The elven people of Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion. Most notable for their cruelty, decadance & dragon riders. (The Dreamthief's Daughter & The Skayling Tree just came out & are stories about Elric).

Keebler Elves. They bake cookies and other goodies and live in trees (look in the cookie isle at Wal-mart).

Santa Elves: They live in a cold climate, have a penchant for green and live in slave labor camps to make toys for some fat overlord. (be good this year, set drugged cookies and milk, make the fat man sing).

Come from a far away planet, eat cats... Oh Sorry, those are Alfs.

Later, Vraille
