Hexographer... bit of a newbie

Hi guys,

I am a bit of a newbie to Hexographer but am using it to build my gameworld, maps etc.
I am just testing it out right now but using some worldbuilding generation using some random ideas of my own to build a dummy island an the Medieval Demographics, I determined that each bordered nation was big enough to have a single city and varing number of towns. I then drew roads to each settlement as i thought they would be built (around hills, forests and in keeping with logic as much as possible)

Each hex is 5 miles wide and the map (including water) is 50 x 30 hexes, so taking water hexes out I get 881 hexes and around 19,000 square miles of land.

I am no expert in Hexographer or Hex map building but my general idea was
Step 1 : build an outline for my island
Step 2 : build some beach areas around parts of the island
Step 3 : build some mountains in the centre of the island
Step 4 : build some hills surrounding the mountains (as it wouldn't make sense I feel for the mountains just to drop off and hit grassland straight away)
Step 5 : build some rivers running from the top of the mountains into the sea
Step 6 : build some grassland around the river areas (as i figured that few rivers go through forests [unless I am wrong] and it makes more sense for the rivers to be in grassland geomes rather than forest)
Step 7 : build some desert areas that made sense in relation to the hills
Step 8 : build some forest areas in clumps to break up the grassland areas
Step 9 : draw the borders for the 4 nations (although small) and that the borders would be drawn to snap to hexes and not go through mountains
Step 10 : draw in the towns and cities
Step 11 : draw a series of roads that link the settlements together and join up the nations as well

The results I got are included below

My biggest problem is finding a way to logically build terrain. I have no idea if mountains drop off to become hills and then that becomes grassland? Do rivers only pass through grassland or also forest?

Also, what is the benefit of some of the specific terrain (grassland hills, small forest, big forest) and is it worth going into such specifics as having 5 different hills, 4 different plains etc or just have 1 tile = 1 type?

I'd love any ideas or resources that determine how logical features relate to their surroundings (when should grass meet forest, desert meet hill) and what kind of order the terrain goes in to form a "fairly" realistic map

I have tried to do a lot of research myself but it is either too complex (going into how to build a planet, air current, tectonics etc) and then some stuff that is pretty basic (such as, 1) build mountains 2) build hills 3) build vegetation and no detail given into steps 1-3 on how to actually paint them on the map)

This is my biggest bugbear right now and is stopping me from coming up with a decent world build
