Well, normally I'd agree. But the party had a choice. One, they can take down Hextor because:

He's about to open a portal to Hell and let an army through.
He's been bugging the heck out of them all campaign.
He's killed their families. The Blackguard's wife came back as a Vampire to kill him. Hextor slaughtered the Druid's clan to make room for his big evil alter.
They're being paid to do it by Titilvious. Compensation includes both money and power.
No brainer, right? Nope. A former party member, by the name of Kalarn, is busy with his own plans. By using the Node and the Key, he plans to seperate this small Material Plane (very small, by comparison) from Ao's web of responsibility. Ao, believing that mortals should choose their own destany, is willing to let this happen. But, by the same token, he must also allow a chance for Kalarn to be stopped. By mortals of course. If they let Kalarn through, the world essentially ends. But Hextor will escape first. Major party choice going on. But, in the end, they decided to attack Hextor. And kicked his fallen deity booty. Hard. Turns out they had a little time and, after rescuing the his (ex)wife's soul, the Blackguard moved at high speed through the forest and, after running for a full day or so, came upon Kalarn. Who's been in a long battle with old (players moved away) party members. He can Shapeshift into a dragon. They can Heal and use Evasion. Long fight. Our dark souled friend joined the battle and, eventually, slayed the dragon Kalarn. Then he moved up to an alter containing a candle and a single snowflake. Which, of course, turns out to be the Node (candle) and the Key (snowflake). Filled with anger and grief, knowing that none he ever cared for (even his freed wife), will never forgive him, Runir Xilocient, Blackguard of Tiamat, took up the snowflake and mashed it into the candle--lit during the battle with the dragon. All Falls Away. [End Campaign]
