D&D 5E High 5e: Review, Resource, & Request Thread

Hello everyone. During my work on Odyssey of the Dragonlords I came up with the idea of reviewing third party 5th Edition sourcebooks. Much like the OGL of the 3rd Edition era, we have tomes ranging from professional writers with high production value to shovelware cash grabs. While many people are most familiar with WotC's work, I feel that it is remiss to ignore the many other sourcebooks out there, be they flying under the radar or are featured in Critical Role's next livestreamed session.

Before are a few of the products I seem interesting, offbeat, or weird enough to be review-worthy. While I have plans for reviewing some below, others should feel free to take up the mantle themselves.

Regular to Large-sized Sourcebooks

These include the industry standard, typically 160 to 400 pages.

Ancestry & Culture: An Alternative to Race in 5e: A book that seeks a compromise between the bioessentialist “all dwarves know how to dodge giants” and making race not matter by providing new rules separating the two. That way, one can mix and match to have an elf raised in human communities, a hero of mixed gnome-tiefling heritage, and guidelines for converting existing races into the new system.

Dark Obelisk Adventure Path: Notable for being the longest sourcebook for well, any D&D/D20 game by sheer pagecount in the thousands. More notable for its length than anything else. This is an undertaking only a rare few can do.

Definitely interested to hear about a lot of these, particularly Adventures in Middle Earth, because it might cool, and Berinncorte, because I'm total sucker for extreme outsider-art type deals (and thousands of pages? Whoa, that's gotta get pretty nuts).

I'll have to skip Tales of the Old Margreve just like I can't read your Odyssey review because I have a DM running Odyssey and I know he has Tales and may want to run that sometime in the future.
 

If you wanted a little more Midgard content, Streets of Zobeck is a great book. In many ways it's what Dragon Heist could have been. Tegel Manor by Frog God Games is also awesome, and has a special place in the early lore of the game, so the 5e reboot is pretty cool.

It's also IMPORTANT to note that ALL SALES of Tegel Manor 5E can ONLY BE USED by Judge Guilds Games, as per Frog God Games request/contractual agreement, toward fulfilling the backers of the City of The Overlord Kickstarter that was never fulfilled to those who backed it.
 

Is this thread just for announcements of upcoming reads, or is it also a place for others to suggest things?

You forgot Rappan Athuk.

I'll have to skip Tales of the Old Margreve just like I can't read your Odyssey review because I have a DM running Odyssey and I know he has Tales and may want to run that sometime in the future.

If it's any consolation, I am in the process of writing a much shorter review with spoiler tags to put up on various websites. Overall I like it, although it has a few rough edges in need of polishing.

If you wanted a little more Midgard content, Streets of Zobeck is a great book. In many ways it's what Dragon Heist could have been. Tegel Manor by Frog God Games is also awesome, and has a special place in the early lore of the game, so the 5e reboot is pretty cool.

Tegel Manor doesn't really grab me. For "haunted house" modules I think I'd be more interested in reviewing the various Castle Ravenloft modules and charting the course of I6's reincarnation throughout the eras.

I'm not averse to suggestions, although keep in mind that given the time and effort needed to write said reviews I tend to do reviews of products I already own and interest me greatly. I don't know enough about Snowhaven, and the initial concept while interesting isn't enough to "wow" me.

As for Rappan Athuk, I own that book but I'm a bit lukewarm in regards to megadungeons. This also ties back into Tegal Manor, but with the exception of the City of Brass I'd rather not make it a habit in reviewing products for Frog God Games.
